Ski Week 2019

Winter thrills met winter chills, as Shawnigan enjoyed Ski Week 2018.

Facing a cold front that arrived at Manning Park as the Shawnigan caravan was in transit, the week began with temperatures that plunged to nearly -30 atop Gibson's Pass.

The cold weather meant that the first polar coaster trip was postponed, while Mr. Kelsey McDaniel's annual overnight snow-camping excursion was cancelled.

However, as the week wore on, temperatures rose, giving nearly 400 students ample opportunity to hit the slopes on skis, snowboards, and cross-country trails.

The calendar for the 45th edition of Shawnigan Ski Week included many of the school's favourite events, including the Inter-house trivia, karaoke, and snow-sculpting competitions.

As well, students had the chance to enjoy snowshoeing and broomball, as well as quiet gatherings for board games and cards.

On Wednesday evening, younger students enjoyed a carnival planned by the Grade 11 leadership group, while Thursday evening saw the entire school laughing together through a Staff Revue.

"Those chance encounters with students and staff on the chairlifts and slopes were hugely stimulating and enjoyable," Headmaster Larry Lamont said, after participating in his first Shawnigan Ski Week. The Lamont family has been experiencing more winter weather, with ~50 cm of snow postponing the return to classes.
