Competition continues through Ski Week

While Ski Week meant a quieter week for Shawnigan sports teams, several groups did brave flights and treacherous roads for key competitions.

Some of Shawnigan's keenest rowers participated in the annual Monster Erg at UVic before making the journey to Manning Park later on Sunday. Shawnigan athletes had many great performances, with a number of students racing for the school for the first time. Although the weather outside remains frightful, this taste of competition will hopefully keep everyone excited for spring racing (if the ice on the lake ever melts!)

Some of the notable performances include:

Junior B Boys 9th place - Gunnar P.
Junior B Girls Lightweight 2nd place - Meghan G.
Junior A Girls 7th and 8th place - Georgia H. and Paige D.
Junior A Girls Lightweight 7th and 10th place - Benita M. and Jaden B.
Junior A Boys Lightweight 1st place - Marc P.

Meanwhile, 2017 grad Kyle Fredrickson placed first in the Para-rowing category. Two Shawnigan coaches also impressed, with Coach Julie Platt placing 2nd in the Masters Women category (narrowly missing first by 0.2 of a second!) and Coach John Bomans finishing 5th in the Masters Men event.

The Senior Girls Basketball Team left a day before the end of Ski Week to attend their home tournament, the Shawnigan Invitational.

Having tuned their game, the girls ventured to Lambrick Park on Thursday morning to face Pacific Christian in a playoff showdown. Down by three points in the dying seconds, Shawnigan's Milena J. drained a three-pointer to send the game to overtime. Ultimately, Milena recorded 48 points in the contest, as Shawnigan won in OT to claim the final spot at the Island Championship – which began later that day.

In hockey, the Girls Prep team faced an early morning departure from Manning Park, as they ventured to Edmonton for a CSSHL showcase. Dropping all four games, the girls will head to the playoffs – March 8-12 in Penticton – as the 7th-ranked team in their division. "The girls battled hard, though we had some problems putting the puck in the net," says Coach Carly Haggard. "Still, we finished off the regular season with some positives and look forward to a tournament this weekend and preparing for the playoffs."

The Bantam Prep team is celebrating a rare win, with a victory on home ice on Wednesday. Hosting Pacific Coast Academy, the bantams got goals from four different skaters and a strong performance from goaltender Darian F. in a 4-1 win. The Bantam Division playoffs run March 13-17.

Of course, much of the school participated in various Ski Week activities, including ski and snowboard racing and drop-in broomball. The annual cross-country race drew nearly 100 competitors, while Michael R. earned athlete of the week honours for his scorching time in the Giant Slalom.
