Raising flags

Celebrating internationalism

A new initiative is celebrating Shawnigan's remarkable international diversity.

Beginning on Thursday, members of the Shawnigan community will be given the opportunity to purchase flags specific to their cultural heritage and national identity.

The school is aiming to acquire a flag for every nationality that contributes to the Shawnigan landscape – with the flags subsequently displayed year round and flown prominantly on each country's national holiday.  Additional events will encourage the sharing of food, music, dress, and traditions throughout the year.

There are currently at least 32 nations represented at Shawnigan, with students from all corners of the globe sharing classrooms, dorms, and meals together.

"Diversity broadens our horizons, challenges us to understand new perspectives, builds empathy and understanding, and correspondingly enriches our lives," said Greg Stevenson, Shawnigan's Director of Development, as he unveiled the new initiative to students on Tuesday.  Greetings in 16 languages were shared, with Mr. Stevenson emphasizing how valuable the opportunity to share culture is, adding, "Your shared experience at Shawnigan is a lifetime bond."
