Robotics triumph

Two teams head to Provincials

Two Shawnigan robotics groups have succeeded in their last-ditch efforts to qualify for the Provincial Championships.

On Feb. 23rd, nine Shawnigan teams ventured to Mark Isfeld Secondary in Comox for the BC Last Chance Qualifier.

Facing frenzied competition from all sides, the Shawnigan robots performed extraordinarily well. One team – featuring Grade 11 boys Sam A. and Gou L. along with Grade 9 girls Janie Z. and Makayla R – earned Top Robot honours and an automatic berth at Provincials. A second robot – created by a girls-only team of Gigi Y., Faline Y., Su Min K., and Sophia C. – won the judges' Design Award, which also earned them a spot at Provincials. A third Shawnigan team also narrowly missed qualifying, making it to the final matchup of the day.

"The girls were incredibly satisfied with the award that celebrated their diligence all year long," says Robotics instructor Paul Doig, adding "They were genuinely surprised by the announcement, and quite emotional."

The two qualifying teams will join 40 other groups at the Provincial Championship, March 2nd at Seaquam Secondary in Delta. In addition to competing for the BC title, the groups will be vying for one of 11 spots at this year's VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Ky.
