Island Sevens

Seniors win on home turf

Hundreds of girls showed spirit and grit as Shawnigan hosted the Vancouver Island High School Girls Rugby Sevens Championship.

Twenty-two teams from 14 schools convened on the Shawnigan fields on Tuesday, as experienced squads competed for spots at Provincials and newcomers played their first games of competitive rugby.

The event featured three divisions (Senior, Junior, Development) playing on three fields, with visitors from across the Island enjoying mostly sunny skies.

In the Senior Division, Shawnigan cruised through the round-robin to earn a spot in the final –providing a highly anticipated matchup against a Belmont team that had beaten Shawnigan in both the Island and Provincial finals last year. With both teams missing several key bodies, Shawnigan was able to withstand some early pressure before ultimately winning by a five-try margin. As Vancouver Island champions and number one seeds overall, Shawnigan will head to the Provincial Championship April 25-26 in Burnaby.

In the Junior Division, Shawnigan lost the opening game to a strong Esquimalt squad – with Esquimalt ultimately winning the division title – before responding with strong play, strong tackles, and strong results later in the day.

In the Development Division, Shawnigan's team was frustrated after an opening loss to SMUS, and showed great determination and improvement throughout the rest of the day.

Shawnigan Coach Dani Robb says she was thrilled with the character showed by all three Shawnigan teams. "We also loved having the Stag truck and the merchandise on the fields, and we're so grateful for the referees and supporters who were up there all day."
