Tournament time

Shawnigan athletes tested in competition

Shawnigan athletes are wrapping up a busy weekend of championships and tournaments.

Rugby:

The final weekend of April saw Shawnigan boys and girls teams competing at the Provincial Rugby Sevens Championships.

After winning the Vancouver Island Championship just before the Easter break, the girls team ventured to Burnaby, April 25-26. Earning a 2-0-1 record in round robin play on day one, the girls finished in first place in Pool A. Advancing to the medal round, the girls fell 22-17 to NorKam in their semifinal. Out of contention for the Provincial banner, the girls responded with a 17-10 win over Mission to earn a bronze medal for the School.

As the girls headed home from Burnaby, the boys headed to St. George's School looking to defend their BC Sevens title. Day one saw Shawnigan earn top spot in Pool A, thanks to wins over Clarence Fulton and Lord Byng and a draw vs. South Delta. On Saturday morning, the boys earned a convincing win over Brentwood to secure a spot in the final – which would feature another matchup against rival St. George's. Unfortunately for Shawnigan, the quick final went in favour of the hosts, with Saints scoring early and defending well in a 33-24 decision.

Tennis:

Shawnigan's tennis team was the first of four school squads to compete in ISA Championships over the course of the week.

Playing at UBC in Vancouver, the girls won two of four matches, playing 5th overall. The boys team, meanwhile, also placed 5th.

Badminton:

On April 25th, two senior badminton teams from Shawnigan took the floor in tournament play, with the "A" squad taking part in the North Island AA tournament in Nanaimo, while the "B" squad travelled to the ISA Championship at SMUS in Victoria. At the ISA tournament, Shawnigan's singles players remained undefeated, with struggles on the doubles court. At the North Island event, however, the team turned in a more consistent performance, narrowly missing the second-place finish needed to advance to the Island Championship.

It was an unavoidable circumstance that the program had to split talents to meet the demands of simultaneous events, though athletes still appreciated the opportunity for competition and feel confident that Shawnigan will be highly competitive next year. Special kudos to Emmett J., Chiara C., Laura L., and Caesar Z for their leadership on and off the court.

Soccer:

Midway through their competitive seasons, both the senior and junior girls soccer teams ventured to the ISA Championships on Friday and Saturday.

Playing at SMUS, the senior girls played very well, finishing the round robin with a 2-1 record. Due to an odd combination of goal differential and dropouts, the seniors lost the final, and ultimately ended up in 5th place.

Playing at GNS, the junior girls opened with two strong Friday performances, both ending in narrow losses (to Brentwood and SMUS). The team was disappointed to lose a 1-0 decision in a strong showing vs. GNS on Saturday morning, before falling to the ultimate tournament champions from Crofton House in the afternoon.

Golf:

Shawnigan's golf team is in the middle of a busy stretch of tournament play. The group travelled to Cordova Bay for the ISA tournament on Sunday and Monday (April 28-29), playing well against some of the best teams in BC, and ultimately finishing in third place. This year's team is led by two strong Grade 8 players (Adam H. and Stewart W.), and heads to the Victoria Police Tournament on Tuesday-Wednesday of this week.

Rowing:

72 Shawnigan rowers braved challenging conditions on the often-wavy waters of Mill Bay for the 49th annual Brentwood College School Regatta, April 26-28. Although wind delays disrupted racing on both Friday and Saturday, the hosts were able to eventually get races in after moving to timed finals in order to have everyone race. Despite all the challenges, Shawnigan athletes performed very well with a number of top six results, including the following medals:

Bronze:
U17 Women 8+
U17 Women 4+
U17 Women 63kg 4+

Silver:
U17 Women 8+
U19 Women School 8+
U19 Men JV 4x+

Gold:
U17 Women 63kg 8+

Athletes are excited to have some intense racing under their belts and now shift focus to preparing for the Shawnigan Lake School Regatta, May 10, 11, and 12!
