Community Cleanup

Earth Day efforts at Shawnigan

The Shawnigan campus is gleaming, after a school-wide cleaning blitz.

In a blossoming Shawnigan tradition, students and staff observed the end of Earth Week by contributing to cleanup efforts on campus and in the local community.

On campus, the entire campus was divided into nine different zones, with each house responsible for picking up trash and discarded items.

Off campus, meanwhile, more than 40 students volunteered for the 2nd annual Shawnigan Lake cleanup – focussing in particular on Renfrew Rd. and the train tracks.

Organized by South Cowichan Rotary and supported by PAN Disposal, Sunday's efforts saw hundreds of residents enjoying beautiful spring weather while scrubbing the community.

As the school's student liaison to the Shawnigan Residents Association, Grade 11 student Milena J. helped organize volunteers, music, and snacks.

"I saw this as an incredible opportunity for the students of shawnigan to get involved with the community while contributing to a great cause," Milena says. "It really showed me how any contribution – big or small – can make a difference."
