Kaye's / Ripley's Chapel

From houses that defy definition

Kaye's and Ripley's Houses teamed up on Thursday morning to create a chapel service of tributes, gratitude, and special moments.

Approaching the lectern slowly (due to a recent sports injury), Kaye's Head of House Sarah R. opened the service by talking about her arrival in Grade 10 from a small town in Northern BC.  "It was intimidating," Sarah admitted, noting that she quickly came to love her housemates for their "individualities, talents, and honest sharing of who they are."

Amplifying Sarah's message, Amelia M. introduced the musical offering by comparing Kaye's and Ripley's to musical harmony.  "Kaye's and Ripley's are a bunch of complicated notes that sound kind of funny on their own," she said.  "But take some time, patience, and practice, and we'll make some beautiful music."  A seven-voice choir then sang Grow As We Go by Ben Platt, with guitar accompaniment by Renee H.  Hayley S. also entertained the audience with an original poem To The Girls, while Dalan M. had set the mood on the piano before the start of the service.

In his time at the lectern, Head of House Jojo T. spoke about the passion, unwavering pride, and brotherhood he learned in Ripley's.  "You arrive as just another kid going to school, and you leave as if you're splitting away from your family – or better yet, your lion pride."

Thanking Kaye's and Ripley's for their contributions, Headmaster Larry Lamont pointed out that the service coincidentally fell on the United Nations' International Day of Living Together in Peace.  The service helped articulate Shawnigan priorities of peace and respect, he said, before wishing students and staff a happy and restful midterm break.
