Sports update

Six teams at Provincials

The end of May is bringing Provincial fever to Shawnigan.

With the season beginning to wind down for term three sports, an array of teams is flying the school's colours at Island and Provincial championships.

Tennis:

Shawnigan's tennis team has added another chapter to its record of consistent achievement.

Competing at the Provincial AA Championship, the squad faced varying Vancouver weather conditions that necessitated both indoor and outdoor play.

With three victories coming down to the wire, the team looked on at 10:30 pm on the final day as doubles pair Leticia C. and Janie Z. won a tie-breaker in their final match to clinch a fifth place finish for Shawnigan.

Earlier this month, Shawnigan's junior team also finished fifth at the combined AA-AAA Provincial tournament.

"I was very proud of the effort from everyone," says Shawnigan Coach John Picken, whose team has now qualified for senior Provincials eight consecutive times.

Rugby:

The School's 1st XV and Jr. boys squad (the Colts), are both in the opening phases of their Provincial tournaments. The Colts played their BC quarter-final on Saturday, earning a comprehensive win over Brentwood. The Colts now join the 1st XV at Abbotsford's Rotary Stadium for Provincial semifinals (Wed) and finals (Fri).

The 2nd XV wrapped up the year with a visit to Vancouver on Saturday, dropping a 36-24 decision to St. George's School.

Golf:

Shawnigan's golf team is returning to the Provincial Championships.

Competing at the Island tournament Thursday and Friday at nearby Arbutus Ridge, the team overcame a 15-stroke day-one deficit to finish second overall and clinch a berth at Provincials.

"The guys came through big time," says Program Coordinator David Hyde-Lay. "In fact, I think their performance has really helped to re-energize and reinvigorate the whole program."

The Provincial AA Championships run June 3-5 at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort near Qualicum.

Rowing:

While the CSSRA-bound rowers had one last day of rowing on Shawnigan Lake, the rest of the term three rowers took to the unseasonably chilly waters of Long Lake, Nanaimo on Saturday to compete in the Sprints at Nanaimo Regatta.

Rain, cooler temperatures, and wind created a few challenges for the team but by the end of the day, the sun came out and spirits were lifted. Many rowers were able to get a few more races in to cap off a great spring term and the two golden highlights were the U19 men's quad and Ian G. in the U15 single.

The CSSRA team left for St Catharines on Monday morning and is gearing up for racing which runs Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2.

Cross-Country:

On Sunday, five students took on their very first half marathons, participating in the MEC Race Series' Royal Roads event.

Coach Mark Swannell says the course was challenging, with three 200-metre climbs in hot conditions. "The five athletes all showed great pacing and stamina throughout," says Mr. Swannell, "and all finished comfortably with, for the most part, a smile on their faces."

The five racers were, Daniella D., Stephanie M., Gillian M., Peter S., and Nicole S.

Six other students ran the 5k event at Royal Roads, including Victoria Q. and Vivek R., who made their first foray into competitive running.

For his part, Coach Swannell also raced the half marathon, posting a time of 1:25:35 – good for first place overall!

The team is also looking forward to a Parkrun on Sunday, June 2. The course will start and finish on the Shawnigan Hills playing fields, while also winding its way around the Shawnigan campus.
