Outer Edge

Grade 8&9 Excursions
The final week of the year meant one last challenge for Shawnigan's junior students.

With Grade 10-12 students hunkered down for their final exams, the School's youngest members ventured to Outer Edge camps for some outdoor adventure.

Split by grades, the Grade 9s journeyed to Cowichan River Provincial Park, camping at Skutz Falls. While the original plan had centred on a river rafting adventure, unusually low water levels meant the group enjoyed tubing down the river instead. Other activities included hiking, swimming, and fishing trips, while the camp groups prepared their own food.

The Grade 8s, meanwhile, enjoyed an excursion to Salt Spring Island with an emphasis on sea kayaking and building confidence in the outdoors.

Accompanied by eight staff members, 40 intrepid Grade 8s spent Monday to Thursday in Salt Spring's expansive Ruckle Park. Divided into camp groups, the students prepared their own meals and enjoyed team-building and leadership opportunities.

Nearby activities included a hike up Mt. Maxwell and a visit of the Ruckle Heritage Farm, while an overnight sea kayaking trip to Wallace Island provided a valuable stepping stone towards next year's Grade 9 trip to Strathcona Park.
