Advisor Meetings

Guidance & Mentoring
The phrase “Use that Gold Book!” was overheard this afternoon, called out by a teacher as a student was leaving his classroom. What prompted this outburst? Was this an over-zealous teacher, or perhaps a student receiving discipline? No, this was an advisor dolling out final advice at the end of a meeting with his advisees. Similar meetings took place all over campus today as students met for the first time with their advisors.

Every Shawnigan student is paired with a staff member, their “advisor,” when they enter the School. Advisors guide, mentor, and encourage their advisees, keeping a close eye on their academics, helping them to make decisions about sports and activities, and providing them with pastoral care. This year we have moved to a weekly meeting between advisors and advisees. Every Wednesday afternoon they will meet to go through a curriculum. Today’s meetings, besides encouraging students to use their Gold Books, served to introduce new students to their advisors and to re-establish connections between returning students and their advisors.
