A weekend of hockey
It was a busy weekend for our Shawnigan hockey teams, with lots of action both on the field and on the ice…

Field Hockey:
Shawnigan and Brentwood co-hosted the Friendship Cup tournament on September 13-14. This annual event kick starts the competitive season, bringing local teams together for a weekend of friendly matches. A dozen teams, split into three divisions (Premier, Competitive and Development), competed throughout what was a very busy (and wet!) weekend. Our Junior A Girls team had a fantastic tournament playing in the Development division, ending with a well-deserved second-place finish. Our Senior Girls team competed in the Premier division, making it all the way to the finals. They then prevailed in a thrilling final game that was decided in a penalty shootout! “Guts and determination and pure heart won the tournament,” enthused Coach Andi Conroy. “The girls are a strong bunch of athletes and phenomenal group of young ladies.” Congratulations to both teams!

Ice Hockey:
We had a full slate of ice hockey games this weekend, with all four of our teams in action. The Bantam team played two exhibition games against the Bantam North Island Silvertips, winning them both. The Midget Varsity team split their two exhibition games against the Midget North Island Silvertips, with their loss coming in an exciting overtime game. The Female Prep team battled hard in an exhibition game against the Vancouver Island Seals and came out with a 2-2 tie. Finally, the Midget Prep team played two league games against Burnaby Winter Club. Both games were very exciting and close, with Shawnigan falling just short (3-1 and 3-2) in each. “It was a great showing from all teams and the coaches are excited to work with players this season,” said Danielle Robb, Ice Hockey Coordinator. “The players from all four teams represented the School extremely well and we are very proud of their efforts this past weekend.”

Overall, it was a fantastic weekend of Shawnigan hockey, and we are very proud of our athletes!
