A smashing success

Shawnigan Junior Open Squash Tournament
The Shawnigan Sportsplex was filled to bursting this weekend as 75 squash players—not to mention their parents and coaches—descended on campus for the 2019 Shawnigan Junior Open Squash Tournament. This annual tournament, a Squash BC sanctioned event, draws athletes from squash clubs around the province. Many of BC’s top players in their age groups were here to compete in what is considered one of the best junior tournaments.

Tournament play began Friday afternoon, with non-stop action through Sunday afternoon. Shawnigan students made the School proud as they played good hosts to the visiting athletes and competed hard in their games. We saw many notable performances from Shawnigan players this weekend. Grade 10 student Forrest H., who has only been playing squash for three weeks, played very well and defeated a number of boys seeded higher than him. Unfortunate scheduling led to Grade 12 student Caesar Z. playing in back-to-back games; he played some very good squash and won both! Always a tenacious competitor, Grade 12 student Cade H. came back twice from two games down to win against strong opposition.

Many thanks to our squash coaches, kitchen team, and other staff and student volunteers for making this weekend a rousing success!
