VEX Robotics tournament

Shawnigan Robotics places 12th overall
Neither fog nor flight delays could stop robotics teams from across the province from attending a prestigious and highly-competitive VEX Robotics tournament at Shawnigan on Saturday.

More than 160 student competitors from Surrey to Saltspring Island to Smithers, comprising 42 teams and their robots, competed in an amazing 74 qualification matches before an intense and quick elimination playoff round.

Shawnigan Robotics fared well, with one of our four robots achieving 12th out of 42, overall. And our team of Sam A., Owen B., Gou L., and Janie Z. won the coveted ‘Build’ award for top mechanical design. Well done team!

Three teams from Smithers, in northwestern British Columbia, had to battle fog and flight delays, arriving on campus well after midnight, Friday. Luckily, Smithers fared well in their first-ever visit to Shawnigan, and were very happy with their performance and their journey to Vancouver Island.

A pairing of two robots won the coveted tournament championship: one from Seaquam Secondary and the other from Burnsview Secondary, both in Delta. It was a well-earned victory for these two teams and their diminutive, fearless metal companions!

Our School team hopes to qualify at BC VEX Tournaments throughout the year, leading to the Spring 2020 provincial championship event – and, with luck and hard work, even the VEX Robotics World High School Championships in Kentucky!

Our team learned a lot of interesting and important lessons and are back in the lab this week, continuing to improve their robots in preparation for the next tournament in Comox, BC, on January 18, 2020.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped this weekend. It was a big success and attendees are reportedly already looking forward to our hosted tournament in November 2020!

Go Robots!
