Sports Update

A successful weekend
It was a busy weekend for our sports teams, as we saw action on the ice, on the field, and in the pool! Many of our teams have now wrapped up their seasons, and most sports change over this week.

Our swimming team competed in the Provincial Championships over the weekend, where they had the best results in Shawnigan history at the Provincial level. Overall, our team scored a record 75 points! There were many standout results, including two Shawnigan finishes in the A finals – grade 11 student Jack L. placed 5th in the 50m breaststroke, and Jack L., Madoc T., Mia L. and Aniela H. placed 8th in the 200m mixed medley relay. Our other relay teams all had strong results in various events in the B Finals.

There was lots of ice hockey action this weekend, with two of our teams on the road and one team playing at home. The Female Prep team traveled to Winnipeg for a CSSHL Showcase, where they played three games. They finished their trip with two convincing wins (5-3 against NAX and 8-4 against Banff) and a close 3-4 loss against St. Mary’s. The Midget Prep team stayed closer to home, travelling to Langford for a CSSHL Showcase. They played against three of the top teams in the league, where they came away with a 2-1 win against OHA-Edmonton, and two losses against Rink Academy and NAX. The Midget Varsity team welcomed Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy from Idaho. They played in three very close and exciting games, ending with a 5-4 overtime win, another 5-4 overtime win, and a 4-6 loss in the third game. “It was a great weekend of hockey for all teams,” said Director of Hockey Mr. Cooper.

The grade 8 rugby team lost a narrow match against St. George’s School in Vancouver. “We absorbed a lot of pressure at the start, conceding a relatively early score, the responded well, scoring one of our own and failing to convert another two opportunities to score,” said coach Mr. Monro. “Ultimately, we lost 4-2, but the desire and commitment was outstanding, and the boys fought hard for the full 60 minutes. Much improvement over the course of the season, and glad to see the group connect and grow closer through rugby.”

“The grade 9 rugby team also traveled to St. George’s on Saturday for the team’s final match of the season,” reports coach Mr. Hyde-Lay. “Expectations were high, as the boys had not lost during the season and had played a physical and entertaining brand of rugby throughout the term. Conditions on the day were slick, as the rain had been falling for some hours before kickoff. True to form, the team got out to a gallivanting start, punching in a couple of gorgeous tries. The second of these might have been the season’s most impressive – a full team effort that saw the ball go through the hands of almost every player, a steady stream of hapless St. George’s defenders helplessly flailing about in the team’s wake! Oh, but how things can change… the second half saw an almost complete reversal of fortune. Our opponents took control of the game and attacked us with a ferocity not yet encountered this season. Three tries on the trot saw them off deserving winners on the day and the post-game social was full of stories featuring the fish that got away! I suspect that these two teams will enjoy each other’s company for many years to come and that the rugby viewing public is in store for some cracking matches in the future.”
