SHOC 2020

Grade 10s practice Canadian democracy
The Hugh Wilkinson Theatre was transformed into the House of Commons on Tuesday as the grade 10 class took part in this year’s SHOC (Shawnigan House of Commons). “This is an annual curricular event for Social Studies 10 and a culminating event that builds on their study of Canadian government,” shared Social Studies teacher and SHOC organizer Mr. Klassen. “It builds deeper understanding of how our parliamentary system works by having them role-play MPs who must represent both their constituency and party.”

After careful preparation and research, students were ready to engage in this hours-long legislative session. Prime Minister Dev. G. navigated this year’s tricky topic – gun control – with a cool head. Things got a little heated when, towards the end of the session, several noisy protesters (who looked suspiciously like some of their teachers) interrupted the proceedings.

This unique experience has given our grade 10 class valuable and memorable insight into our Canadian parliamentary system, and may even have inspired some future parliamentarians!

Special thanks to several grade 11 students who helped to run the event: Finn R. (Speaker), Dominic P. (Deputy Speaker), Siena V., Jazmin W. and Vivek R. (Clerks), and Gordon K. (Sergeant-at-arms).
