Shawnigan junior roboteers compete in Vancouver
The Shawnigan Robotics junior team competed in their first ever VEX IQ tournament at St. George’s School in Vancouver on Sunday, January 26.

Seven students had planned for months and spent hours designing, building, coding, and testing in preparation for this event. With 17 robots in the field, our junior roboteers entered with some apprehension as to whether their robots would be competitive. The weekly “Drive Wednesdays” in our robotics lab proved excellent training as the students had four internal tournaments as they prepared for this Sunday event.

It was an amazing day of learning and competitive play. Each robot team performed very well and held their own in a talented field of grades 7-9 students from all over the Lower Mainland. As the sole Island team, Shawnigan represented well with 3rd place, 4th place, 6th place and 14th place finishes.

The team brought home many new ideas to evolve their robots. We look forward to engaging with fellow Island teams in the next few months to have more local tournaments and robot jamborees.
