Ski Week

Ski Week

Snowy adventures for the whole School

For five wonderful days, Shawnigan Lake School was transplanted to Manning Park Resort. Our 47th annual Ski Week was at once unique and yet rich with beloved traditions. Thanks to several newly built accommodations at the resort, we were able to include our grade 12 students for the first time in many years. That was not the only change Manning Park had in store for us – they also had a brand new four-seater chairlift servicing one of their two hills!
The week began with glorious sun on Monday, followed by steady snow for the rest of the week – powder-lovers were thrilled! We were all delighted with the mild temperatures throughout the week, with echoes of last year’s -30 Celsius weather still in our memories.

Many favourite activities filled our days, such as cross-country skiing lessons, snowshoeing, and downhill skiing and snowboarding during the daytime; and karaoke, broomball, the grade 11 carnival, and the ever-popular Staff Review – a skit put on by Shawnigan staff – in the evenings. House pride was on full display during numerous Inter-house events, including cross-country skiing, snow sculptures, downhill events, and Reach for the Top.

Our brave Search and Rescue students and staff embarked on their annual overnight adventure, hiking to a backcountry area near the top of the ski hill and spending the night in tents on the mountain.

In between all these events and activities, new friendships and memories were also formed in the calmer times – waiting in line for a steaming hot lunch in the snow, quality conversations on the chairlift, and quiet gatherings for board games and cards. As always, we have returned a closer-knit community.
