Sports Update

It’s tournament time!
As we approach the end of the winter sports season, it has been a busy few weeks for Shawnigan’s athletes.

Our Midget Prep ice hockey team hosted a showcase weekend against the Okanagan Hockey Academy during our recent half term break. Our boys first took on the Okanagan Red team on February 8, and came away with a comfortable 4-1 win. The following day, they played against the Okanagan Black team, winning in dominant fashion with a final score of 8-0. The team travelled to the mainland the following weekend (February 15-16), where they were victorious in back-to-back games against Burnaby Winter Club.

Our Bantam Prep ice hockey team made a quick trip to the Okanagan last weekend, where they played two games against local teams. They began with a tough loss against Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in Kelowna on Saturday, followed by a convincing 7-2 win against the Okanagan Hockey Academy in Penticton on Sunday.

Shawnigan Lake School hosted the CVIAA Tournament for Grade 8 & 9 Boys basketball on Tuesday, February 11. Our team played very well throughout, making it all the way to the finals and coming out of the tournament with a second place finish. Their strong play in this tournament has qualified them for the Island Championships, which will take place this weekend in Courtenay.

The Senior Boys basketball team also competed in a qualifying tournament for the Island Championships this week – the North Islands tournament in Qualicum Beach. The team had a good weekend and came out with a qualifying berth for the upcoming Island Championships, hosted in nearby Mill Bay this weekend.

The girls’ basketball programs are a week ahead of the boys. Our Junior Girls basketball team had already qualified for the Island Championships, which took place last weekend in Mill Bay. This weekend of competition served as a good learning experience for our girls as they continue to develop their skills.

After winning the North Island tournament a week earlier, our Senior Girls basketball team also competed in the Island Championships, hosted here at Shawnigan Lake School last weekend. They encountered some tough competition at this tournament, but played solid basketball throughout the weekend, ending with a fourth place finish.

Congratulations to all of our athletes, and best of luck in the upcoming events.
