Last-chance Qualifier
Robotics students compete at BCIT tournament
Shawnigan had four of its robots compete in the penultimate BC robotics tournament this past weekend at BCIT in Burnaby, BC. 91 robots from all over BC competed to gain a qualifying spot to the Provincial Championships next week. Shawnigan had two rookie teams make their debut (Alex R., Richard L. and Lucas L. on one squad and Emirhan A., James F., Emmett J.. Hiroki N. and Roham M. on the other). These two teams fared well for their first tournament and are now warmed up for next week’s Island Provincial Championships in Comox, BC.
Grade 10 robot gurus and twins, Justin and Jacky L., battled hard throughout the day and finished respectably with a knockout loss in the quarterfinals to our own top robot from Shawnigan. This top veteran team of Sam A., Owen B., Gou L. and Janie Z. dominated the tournament, finishing 6-0 and placing second in the qualification rounds. They paired up with the first place robot and were poised to win the playoffs, but a mechanical glitch caused a severe malfunction in the semifinal match, resulting in a fourth place finish overall. They came home with hardware, winning the “Amaze Award” for clever and innovative design.
Our robots benefited immensely from this tournament and they are ready to train hard this week and attempt to win the Island Provincial Championship Tournament on Saturday, February 29 in Comox. Four berths to the VEX World Championships are up for grabs this weekend, and our robots are ready to compete and have fun. Go Robots!
