Sports Update

Winter sports seasons conclude
With our athletics program changing from second to third term sports this week, many of our athletes had a busy final weekend of competition!

Shawnigan’s Junior and Senior squash athletes participated in the Brentwood Squash Tournament over the weekend. At this tournament, competition is divided into different tiers based on ability instead of age. Our grade 8 novice players, Logan R. and Jackson P., played very well in their first taste of competition. Grade 10 student Kyle K. had a strong tournament, winning the consolation game in the silver division. And grade 12 student Cade H. did not lose a match all weekend and won the gold division. He was named Shawnigan’s Male Athlete of the Week thanks to his accomplishment.

Our Senior Boys and Grade 8 & 9 Boys basketball teams both competed in the Island Championships over the weekend. Congratulations to Luca A. of the Grade 8 & 9 team, who was named on the tournament all-star team at the end of the weekend! Our junior boys played well throughout the weekend, ending round robin play with two wins, plus a loss to eventual tournament winners Dover Bay Secondary School. Their final game of the tournament was against Brentwood College School to determine the 3-4 spots, with the top three teams going on to Provincials. This nail-biter of a game ended with a tough one-point loss in overtime. “We coaches are so proud of them; we’ve come a long way as a family of 17 since the beginning of the season. It was our pleasure to see them grow and develop their basketball, communication and leadership skills,” said coach Ms. Yang.

Our ice hockey teams are playing their final games before playoffs, which will take place over Spring Break. Congratulations to Seiya T.C., Ben K. and Sophia A. for each being nominated as the most sportsmanlike players in their respective divisions in the CSSHL!

The ShaWood ice hockey team, made up of female players from both Shawnigan and Brentwood, traveled to Vancouver to play in their first games of the year. For some of these athletes, these were their first ever games! The girls had a fantastic weekend and the entire team was named the Female Athletes of the Week at Shawnigan.

In other ice hockey action, the Midget Prep team played in back to back games against St. George’s School in Vancouver. These tightly contested games both ended in a shootout! The Female Prep team hosted their final home games of the season against the visiting Okanagan Hockey Academy. Although both ended in a one-point loss, our athletes played their best games of the season. And finally, the Midget Varsity team traveled to the mainland to participate in the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy Elite 15s Tournament.
