Provincial Scholarships

Rewarding excellence
Twelve graduating Shawnigan students have been selected as recipients of 2020 District/Authority Scholarships from the province of B.C. The awards are given to graduating students in recognition of demonstrable excellence in their chosen field of interest or strength. Award recipients receive a $1,250 scholarship voucher to use towards their post-secondary tuition.

Unlike in previous years, the students had to adapt to an online application and interview process. Shawnigan’s visual arts and design teacher Vikki Agate stepped in to help visual arts students create online portfolios and develop their artist statements.

"The diversity of applications and talents was exceptional this year,” shares Guidance Counsellor Alison Dewis, noting that 2020 was the first year Shawnigan had applicants in the AP Computer Science and Theatre Production categories. “This year there were double the number of applicants from schools on the Island than there were scholarships available, so to have twelve recipients from Shawnigan is fabulous! All our applicants should be proud of their efforts; they are all very talented young people.”

The following students have been recognized for excellence in their fields of interest: Sam A. ’20 (Lonsdale’s) for computer programming, Andrew B. ’20 (Ripley’s) for leadership, Mikayla B. ’20 (Kaye’s) for team performance in sport, Anna C. ’20 (Strathcona) for volunteer activity, Olivia E. ’20 (Kaye’s) for volunteer activity, Corbin H. ’20 (Lake’s) for leadership in sport, Selena L. ’20 (Strathcona) for studio art, Moyra M. ’20 (Kaye’s) for dance, Sophie M. ’20 (Groves’) for individual performance in sport, Katie P. ’20 (Groves’) for dance, Cole R. ’20 (Duxbury) for carpentry/joinery, and Chloe S. ’20 (Renfrew) for team performance in sport.
