Closing Week

Tradition reimagined
Five-Year Graduates
Each year, one of the stepping stones on the way to Closing Day is an event designed to celebrate the School’s five-year graduates—students who have enjoyed their whole high school experience at Shawnigan. This year’s celebration saw five-year graduates, along with advisors and staff, gather online on June 23 to enjoy a special slideshow designed to recognize their unique relationship with the School and with one another. An important part of this annual event is the speeches delivered by an advisor or mentor for each student, and this year was no different. Advisors sent in two-minute videos that were posted on a special celebration page on ShawNet.

Internal Awards
The presentation of internal awards, including Arts and Activities Colours, Sports Colours, Academic Colours, Art and Activities Awards and Course Awards, was released to the community as a video on the evening of June 24. These awards traditionally recognize students who have stood out over the course of the year for their commitment and successes, as well as for their character and leadership.

Closing Day
The community gathered together online again on June 25 to watch a special Closing Day video celebrating the in absentia granting of House Awards, Academic Form Prizes and major awards ranging from the Groves’ All-Rounder to The Jason Yosung Park Scholarship and the JWS Lecky Award.

Other Events
Closing Week was also marked by a small number of informal, physically distanced House gatherings for a few local graduating students, as well by the June 26 release of a special Class of 2020 video, featuring Headmaster Larry Lamont, Co-Heads of School, a speech from Jay Connolly and a slideshow. The whole School was celebrated in a separate video release on June 27 that marked the end of the Closing Week broadcasts. This final video encompassed Stag Awards and the Eagle Feather Award, announced the new 2020/21 Heads of School and Prefects, and honoured the retirement of long-serving and much-loved staff members, Scott Noble and Gary Dukelow.

For a complete listing of all Closing Week broadcasts, please see the SOUL page on ShawNet. A full program with the names of award winners will be available in the final Parent News of the school year.
