Fighting Cancer Together

Student-led fundraising efforts
At Shawnigan, we care deeply for others. This is reflected in our stated values. It is instilled through Assistant Head Matt Clinton-Baker’s refrain, “At Shawnigan, we take care of ourselves and each other.” It is evident in our daily interactions with each other and the wider community. And it is demonstrated each fall through our earnest fundraising efforts and outpouring of support for the Canadian Cancer Society.

This year’s fundraising campaign was entirely student-led and was spearheaded by our House Prefects. Despite being in the midst of a pandemic, these student leaders put in a spectacular effort, generating much excitement in the Houses and designing creative fundraising initiatives.

The main event every year is undoubtedly the student and staff head shavings and hair donations. This year the head shavings and haircuts took place in intimate House cohorts across campus – but the atmosphere was no less enthusiastic than usual! Other initiatives included a bake sale, a donut sale, and a pie throwing contest that ended with a surprise entry on the list of those receiving a pie to the face: Headmaster Lamont!

Our student leaders, with support from our entire School community, have worked some true Shawnigan magic. At the close of our fundraising window on Thursday night, we had raised $50,000 – a new Shawnigan record! We have been so humbled by the generosity of our Shawnigan Lake School community and the way in which everyone has rallied together this fall for such a good cause. We look forward to presenting this cheque to a representative from the Cops for Cancer next week.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
