An Island Thanksgiving

Shawnigan celebrates
With travel off-island being discouraged for Shawnigan students and their families, and over 100 students remaining at the School during what is traditionally a very quiet weekend, Shawnigan staff came together to offer a range of creative long weekend activities to keep students entertained and bring a feeling of holiday celebration to campus.

Starting with Shawnigan’s traditional Thanksgiving supper in Marion Hall on Thursday night, students also had access to supervised fitness, squash, and skating sessions on Friday, followed by in-House movie nights.

On Saturday, Sunday and Monday, students were able to take advantage of a shuttle bus to Mill Bay to enjoy some shopping, take a scenic hike up local landmark, Mount Baldy, with science teacher Erica Hamilton and English teacher Cari Bell, or tackle a backwoods hike to the local Koksilah River with Outdoors Coordinator Eric McDonald.

They were also treated to gelato from the Gondola Italian Gelato truck that visited campus, and could chose from a variety of other activities ranging from skating to squash, paintball, yoga, photography, School Museum tours, or a sunny walk to a local café, Shawnigan House Coffee & Chocolate, with School Chaplain Jim Holland.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
