Fly-tying takes flight

A student passion
Fly-tying has been a unique part of Shawnigan’s co-curricular offerings for over a decade, with students getting the opportunity to test their flies, and their fishing mettle, on Shawnigan Lake, the Cowichan River, and further afield on the Island’s rugged west coast rivers.

As many experienced anglers attest, there’s an entirely new level of satisfaction to catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself. This passion was brought to Shawnigan originally by a former member of staff who had enthusiastically led the fly-tying group throughout his tenure at Shawnigan. Without an impassioned and knowledgeable staff member present to lead the charge this year, questions were raised about the continuation of the group.

That’s when School Prefect Kristjan S. stepped in with a plan. As a student leadership initiative, Kristjan volunteered to lead the group, helping his peers, both novice and experienced, to continue this imaginative and creative outdoor pursuit. While fly-tying can seem a daunting pursuit to start, Kristjan’s experienced leadership and passion have ensured this unique co-curricular activity will continue to function and flourish at Shawnigan for the foreseeable future.

Grade 12 student Keely R. is another talented student-instructor within the co-curricular program at Shawnigan, sharing her passion for the art and science of astrophotography with her peers.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
