Indigenous Peoples Day

With the school year wrapping up before Canada’s official National Indigenous Peoples Day 2021 on June 21, Shawnigan celebrated the day early with a host of fantastic student-led culinary, creative and cultural activities taking place across campus.
The whole school was treated to delicious smoked and candied coho and sockeye salmon during break on Friday. Generously donated by a Shawnigan family, the salmon was served from the Stag kitchen by Darwin D.

For those seeking a bit of fresh air and exercise, First Nations coach Naomi Wasler was on hand at the fields to teach a lacrosse lesson, while Bea M. ran a drop-in session in the Hobbies Building focusing on bookmark colouring with traditional art.

Caitlyn B. also ran a culinary session focused on bannock making over an open fire at the upper fields.

Thank you to the many Shawnigan students who worked together to provide a warm and welcoming educational campus experience in honour of Indigenous culture.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
