Metis Sash Presentation

For the past four years, Brigette Furlonger, past parent of Keiran Furlonger, has been recognizing Métis students who graduate from Shawnigan Lake School. Sashes are gifted to graduating students across the province, and this year Brigette recognized Alexander R., Beatrice M. and Ryan S. The Furlonger family also awards the Furlonger Métis Scholarship each year to a student who has demonstrated pride in his/her/their heritage and a commitment to post-secondary education after graduation.
Brigette expressed her pride in each of our graduating students’ quest for self-identity and desire to learn about and participate in Métis cultural events. “Being sashed is one of those events,” she said. “It is a milestone, a rite of passage and an act of recognition for all the hard work these three have done thus far.” She spoke about the cultural significance of the sash and reminded them to “wear their sashes with pride and as a symbol of resilience,” and to be “mindful that it is just as important to remember the past as it is to forge into the future with our heads held high.”

“Kish-ki-shi pi Kish-chii-tay-i-moohk.”

“Remember and be proud.”

The recipient of the Furlonger Métis Scholarship for 2021 is Ryan S.
