Grade 8 Sorting Hat

One of Shawnigan’s uniquely differentiating features is our carefully crafted Grade 8 experience. Rather than being immersed in a “big House” from the get-go, our Grade 8s begin their Shawnigan journey in the specially-designed Grade 8 Houses with their peers: Stanton for the girls and Levien for the boys.
As the school year draws to a close, the Grade 8 experience is completed with a magical school tradition: the Sorting Hat Ceremony. Presided over by Gaynor Samuel, Executive Director of Admissions, this ceremony reveals to our youngest members which “big House” they will be joining in the fall and represents the completion of the first step of their Shawnigan journey.

Following the ceremony, the Grade 8s were taken to their new Houses, where they received a warm welcome from the older students.

Although they have now found a new home in one of the seven other boarding houses – where they will continue to grow, learn, and make lasting memories – these students have developed a grade culture characterized by close friendships that will shape and support the rest of their time at Shawnigan.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education, including those regarding learning cohorts, physical distancing and mask-wearing when appropriate.
