Getting the ball rolling

The new academic year has brought with it the highly anticipated return of competitive sports to secondary schools across British Columbia – and the excitement is palpable on Shawnigan’s campus. Participation in sports is vital for our physical and mental health and is one of the fundamental elements of a Shawnigan education. Our School was fortunate to have been able to run wonderfully reimagined sports programs on campus last year and we were all impressed with the enthusiasm and leadership of our Shawnigan athletes as they embraced the changes that came with the pandemic.
Teams across all sports are certainly making up for lost time, with many competitions taking place in the first two weeks of term. Last weekend, Shawnigan was thrilled to bring back the Friendship Cup, a longstanding junior and senior girls’ field hockey tournament that Shawnigan co-hosts with Brentwood College School. This year’s tournament brought together 15 teams from 11 schools from across Vancouver Island. Shawnigan’s senior team acquitted themselves well in the very tight Premier Division, while the junior and Grade 8 teams gained valuable experience in the Development Division – most of them experiencing their first-ever competitive play!

Two of our ice hockey teams, the Female U18 Prep team and the U15 Prep team, played in exhibition games last weekend as a warmup to their competitive seasons. Both teams, along with the U18 and U17 Prep teams, will open their seasons against other CSSHL teams this weekend.

Our Grade 9 boys’ rugby team travelled to nearby Brentwood College School to play in a mini tournament with Brentwood and St. Michaels University School from Victoria. These games marked the first inter-school competition in these athletes’ short rugby careers! Shawnigan’s team was pleased to come away with two solid wins.

Shawnigan’s senior girls’ volleyball team started their season strong, winning the first tournament of the year on Saturday, while earlier in the week, our cross country team ran against local competition at Bright Angel Park as part of the Cowichan Valley Cross Country Series.

It has been a busy two weeks but there is even more on the horizon, including the senior boys’ soccer team who are participating in a tournament this Friday and Saturday!

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
