2021 World Girls Hockey Weekend

On a rainy fall Sunday as an atmospheric river made its way across Shawnigan’s Charlie Purdey Arena there was a gathering of girls that took place on the ice as part of the 10th annual World Girls Hockey Weekend. The energy in the arena would have been enough to raise the roof as girls from the U18 Female Prep team took to the ice with young girls from the nearby Kerry Park Minor Hockey to mentor and have fun in an environment celebrating the game of hockey.
An initiative of the International Ice Hockey Federation, the World Girls’ Ice Hockey weekend is not only a celebration of girls hockey but an effort to grow the game around the world with the hopes of recruiting, retaining, and engaging not only players, but also coaches, officials, and fans of the sport. From coast to coast there are grassroots programs that are led by girls’ hockey associations, minor hockey associations, and communities. With barriers removed, the growth of girls playing hockey has been exponential over the last few years and it’s only going to be a matter of time before the girls who participated are the ones skating to victory in the Women’s Worlds Championships and inspiring the next generation of young female skaters.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
