Sports Update

We are a few weeks into term two athletics and Shawnigan’s sports teams have already been very busy! Here are just a few highlights from the past few days:
Mr. Tim Coy, one of the coaches of the Female Prep ice hockey team, shares the following update about their recent participation in the 2 Nations Brampton tournament: “The Female Prep team headed to Brampton, Ontario for a tournament this past weekend. 34 teams were entered, and four pools were created for the round robin portion. On Friday, the girls had a very challenging first game against a strong team from Winnipeg. In the second period, Amy G. scored on a deflection and Wynne A. made the goal stand up for a 1-0 win. We then had our way with a team from Ontario, winning 9-1. Saturday began with a tough game that saw us trailing 3-1 in the third. Abby W. tied it up late and we had to settle for a 3-3 tie. These results put us into the medal round, and we played another team from Winnipeg in the round of 16. A clear 4-1 win put us into the quarterfinals. Mikayla B. had a huge game with all four goals! On Sunday morning, we had another one-sided win, 5-0 over an Ontario team, which put us into the semi-finals against a rival from our own league, NAX. The team fought hard, though they entered the third period trailing 1-0. Tired and facing elimination, everyone dug deep, and we managed to pull out a 4-2 win. Goals from the point by Keaira H. and Allison M. were the difference. Both goals were set up by beautiful and timely face-off wins by Sophie A. Sadly, it was not to be as the team ran out of gas in their seventh game in three days. They lost the final, but overall, it was an incredible result from this gritty, talented and special group of girls.”

The Senior Girls basketball team played in the Vanier Tournament in Courtenay last weekend. In their first game, they played against Wellington Secondary and came out with a solid 51-45 win despite playing short-handed, thanks to excellent play from the whole team and in particular Allison A. and Catherine A. Their second game was against hosts GP Vanier Secondary, who are a Division AAAA school. Our girls battled hard and were up at half time, but the physical play of the other team wore our team down and the end result was a 54-43 loss. In their final game of the tournament, Shawnigan played a nail-biter against Highland Secondary. “We won 61-60 with a clutch free throw made by Leya L. with five seconds remaining,” shares coach Darrin Austin. “Leya was amazing – she scored 25 points while also checking their best player, and did that the entire game without committing a foul – one very fit athlete!” Shawnigan finished the tournament in third place, with our top performers being Leya L. and Catherine A. This weekend they head to Mulgrave School in West Vancouver to compete in the ISAA Tournament.

Last weekend, the Senior Boys basketball team played in their first tournament since February 2020, traveling to Mulgrave School for the ISAA Tournament. “We placed fifth out of 10, beating St. Johns School and losing closer games to West Point Grey Academy and Southridge School,” says coach Remi Anctil. “The tournament was fun and brought the team closer together. Coach Yorath and I are excited about this group of athletes and know we have a lot of work to do.” On Thursday night, the team played their first league game at home against Gulf Islands Secondary School, coming out with a strong 76-57 win. Their next game is against Pacific Academy on Friday night.

“The Grade 9 Boys basketball team hosted the Cowichan Valley Classic Tournament last weekend and placed second after a thrilling comeback in the final game that saw them coming up just three points short,” shares coach Andrew Shepherd. “It was an amazing way to start the year for this very talented group. We had stand out performances at the CVC Tournament from Ryland C., Sebastian J., and team captain Georges G.” Next up for the team is a home game against Frances Kelsey Secondary School on Tuesday afternoon.

The Junior Varsity ice hockey team gives players not on our CSSHL teams a chance to play hockey at a different level. The team competes in a local high school league and so far has played against Frances Kelsey Secondary School and Cowichan Secondary School, splitting the games with one win and one loss.

Field hockey players are able to work on their skills in the off season through the Indoor Field Hockey League. “We are playing indoors as a developmental season to give our program depth and allow kids to play more,” explains coach Andi Conroy. “We play in a league on Sundays in Duncan, and there will be a junior tournament in January. It is fast, fun, and great for skill development.”

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
