Vancouver Island VEX Robotics Tournament Season Opener hosted by Shawnigan
For the first time in over 24 months, Shawnigan Robotics was thrilled to once again be hosting the Vancouver Island VEX Robotics Season Opener tournament. COVID-19 derailed their 2020 run to the World Championships and kept the 2021 season under wraps with only in house tournaments being held. Finally, last week, the opportunity for an in-person robotics tournament for our keen roboteers happened.
Hosting 21 robotics teams from all over Vancouver Island, our School entered six distinct and unique robots under the Shawnigan Robotics banner. Four of the robot teams were rookies, and two were very experienced senior squads. This year’s game, Tipping Point, is a challenging and strategic game with a multitude of ways to score points. Each of the robots at the tournament played seven qualifying matches resulting in a ranking from one to 21. This set the stage for the playoff round where robots pair up and stay together as a team throughout the sudden-death playoff bracket.
Shawnigan was well represented in the quarter-final playoff round with five of our six teams still alive. Some early defeats and upsets saw some fade quickly while others made it through to the semis and final round. Our team of Tye E., Aniela H., Kyan M., and Ben P., fought hard through the bracket and landed confidently in the final game. Paired with a robot from the Robotics 71 team from Comox, the final saw this pairing emerge victorious as tournament champions in a very close and competitive match.

The next tournament is in Comox at Mark Isfeld Secondary School on Saturday, January 15, 2022. Shawnigan will also be hosting the Island Championship tournament on Saturday, March 5, 2022, where three berths to the World Championships in Dallas, Texas will be up for grabs. Come watch it live, or tune into our livestream for this exciting event.
