RBC Training Ground finalist, a Shawnigan first

A bit of hard work, grit and determination can get you almost anywhere. Just ask Ava F., a Grade 11 student at Shawnigan who recently competed in the RBC Training Ground top 100 finals, and earned a spot in the top 30! A huge accomplishment for anyone, RBC Training Ground is a program designed to seek out young Canadians with Olympic potential, through various tests of endurance, strength, power and speed to determine who has what it takes to achieve those podium dreams and award them with a spot on Team Canada. Only 100 athletes from across the country were selected to participate, and Shawnigan had two athletes represented this year.
Ava is a strong academic student who has taken advantage of every opportunity at Shawnigan. As an accomplished rugby player, she will start training with Rugby Canada in hopes of participating in a future Olympic Games. With the support of her coaches and teammates at Shawnigan behind her, the experience she has gained while attending the School has been instrumental in getting her to where she is now. At only 16 years old, Ava trains with both the men’s and women’s teams at Shawnigan and can always be found on the pitch or in the gym on campus. The athletics program at Shawnigan, which has evolved over the years to one that is unparalleled in its make-up of world-class coaches and facilities, certainly helps fuel those Olympic dreams. Many of the coaches and coaching staff at Shawnigan include Olympians as well as Olympic Medalists, providing the perfect motivation and mentorship to our young athletes.

The other athlete selected as a top 100 finalist of note in this year's competition is Shawnigan alumnus Dawson Anderson ‘18 (Copeman’s) who played basketball and rugby while at the School. Dawson earned a top score in the vertical jump test. Dawson’s success in his athletic career is another example of the opportunities available to students at Shawnigan. With such strong academic, athletic and co-curricular offerings, the School is truly an environment that lives out its mission to spark minds, kindle hearts and forge futures.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
