Legion Remembrance contest

In the fall of 2021 students from Law 12 and Beyond The Gates (Humanities 9) produced meaningful essays and poetry themed on Remembrance, as an honour to Canada’s veterans, and submitted them to the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poster and literary contest. With submissions from all over Canada, judges reviewed and gave awards in different categories starting at a local level, with the first place recipients moving on to the regional level with some making it to the national level where their work will be proudly displayed for the year at Canada’s War Museum in Ottawa. Last year, Shawnigan Lake School’s Abby Dyer ‘21 won first place at the national level in 2020/2021 for her Senior Poem submission.
This year, on a local level our students saw great success with a number of first, second and third place awards in various Senior and Intermediate categories. The Senior category saw our students place first, second and two tying third in the essay category, a third place in the poster category and a first and second place in the poetry category. Our Grade 9 students saw first place in the Intermediate essay and three students tying for third place in the Intermediate poem category. The students whose work will be judged at the regional level are Esme S. ‘22 for her Senior Essay, Robin S. ‘22 for his Senior Poem, and Sebastian J. ‘25 for his Intermediate Essay. Good luck to you all! Please see below the list of all of our students who placed this year.

Our Beyond the Gates program is showing great success in its pilot year and seeing students thriving in all areas of their experiential learning is nothing short of exciting. By interconnecting their academics with community organizations they are adding experience, meaning, and intent to their learning. With a goal of fostering remembrance amongst Canadians, this contest allowed students from Shawnigan to assist the Legion in achieving this goal.
