Inter-House Competitions

Inter-House competition was in full swing as part of the Apres Ski Week festivities this week with an esports tournament on Tuesday night followed by a Reach for the Top quiz night on Wednesday night. With the pandemic requiring that these events take place virtually, the organizers had their work cut out for them as they set up a live stream so that all Houses could cheer on their delegates. In esports, House representatives battled it out in teams playing Super Mario Super Smash Bros. For those not familiar with esports tournaments, just imagine a sports tournament but for video gamers! Introduced in pre-pandemic times, the esports tournament at Shawnigan has become an annual event the students look forward to, and it's an event that can take place regardless of what is going on around us. With that being said, the stakes were high as students from each House took to the controllers to battle to the top.
The commentators for the evening were Mr. Lupton and Mr. Pienaar whose banter and camaraderie throughout the evening kept a smile on everyone's faces, even while trying to remain focused on the game in front of them. With Renfrew and Duxbury Houses as the reigning champs, competition was fierce, trash talk was inevitable, and laughter contagious as students battled for the win. It was the reigning champs who took the trophies this year, which were made right here on campus in the Art Lab on the 3D Printer, and Sorath (Renfrew) and Ryan (Duxbury) were the victors this time around.

With another great night of esports under their belts, the Houses were ready to claim victory when Reach for the Top quiz night started on Wednesday evening. With the Head of the School, Mr. Larry Lamont leading the evening as the MC, there was no shortage of laughter as buzzers were hit and friendly rivalries were in full swing. The powerful performances on display put the top four all-stars Hayley T. (Renfrew), Janie Z. (Renfrew), Anna P. (Groves’), and Max (Lake’s) against the staff, and it was a fight to the finish with the staff victorious by a mere three points. In the end, the House that claimed victory were the reigning champions of Renfrew followed by Groves’ and a third-place tie between Lonsdale’s and Kaye’s.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
