CVIAA Junior B Basketball Champions

Congratulations to Shawnigan’s Junior B (Grade 9) boys’ basketball team, which has just won the Central Vancouver Island Championships! The tournament, which took place at nearby Duncan Christian School on Tuesday, February 15, brought together the top four teams – the “Final Four” – from the 11 team league.
Shawnigan completed a comeback win against Quamichan School in the semifinal, winning by six points after trailing by eight late in the third quarter. In the championship game, Shawnigan defeated host DCS in a game that they controlled for the final three quarters of play. Shawnigan’s team was led by Ryland C., who scored 19 points in the final. “He truly decided he wasn’t going to let us lose and delivered his best game of the season when it counted the most!” says coach Andrew Shepherd.

This win is just the latest in what has been a highly successful season for these athletes. “Our team went undefeated in CVIAA league play on the way to the Final Four,” explains Coach Shepherd. “We won all five regular season games, our crossover divisional playoff game and then our two Final Four games.”

Next up for this team is the Central Zone Knockout Tournament, which takes place this coming Monday and Tuesday. The top two teams from that tournament will earn berths to the Island Championships, which will in turn give teams the opportunity to play for two spots at the Provincial Championships.

“This is the most fun time of year for basketball, and things are really just starting to heat up,” shares Coach Shepherd. “It is amazing that we snagged this CVIAA Title when we did as it hopefully helps us carry over the positive momentum into the Zone Knockouts and beyond!”

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
