Shawnigan Lake Outstanding Minor Officials

Our very own Shawnigan Lake Outstanding Minor Officials (affectionately known as the SLOMO team) are making a name for themselves when it comes to the work they are doing on the court. From our internal coaches, to external coaches, all the way up to major officials, the team is getting praised for their work under pressure. Many referees have chosen to sign up for Shawnigan home games, not only because of the facility but also for the teamwork they experience working with the SLOMO team. Recently, an official was overheard personally telling the crew at the scores table that they are the reason they will continue to return to Shawnigan to officiate.
Minor Officials make the games possible! They know all of the rules and regulations of the game and officiate the games to ensure fair gameplay for all. As is to be expected, the program is continually seeing movement, with this year seeing some of the more experienced MO’s graduating, resulting in a new group of non-basketball students getting trained up. After 18 months of no competition and no spectators, they are doing excellent work and continuing to learn ‘on the job’ as they gain experience in the various roles they are required to play on the court.

This year, recognition goes out to Hayley T. ‘22, who has taken on the lead with organizing and allocating the group. This is purely a volunteer assignment, one that requires juggling students who are signed up for other sports/activities, so it is a true sign of their commitment. Hayley first joined the program in Grade 9 when she realized that she wouldn’t make the top team, but still loved the game and wanted to stay involved and give back in a unique way. Fast forward four years and Hayley still has a passion for what she does. She’s developed great organizational and communication skills (each referee has a different interpretation of the rules) and jokes that she still gets to enjoy the best seat in the house at every game.

The SLOMO team is an integral part of the basketball program - essentially, we could not enjoy and celebrate our teams playing on our homecourt if we did not have the support of this crew. So come on out and cheer on our Shawnigan teams and the Minor Officials who make it all possible.
