At Shawnigan, we take care of each other

Pink Shirt Day gives us the opportunity to emphasize our stance against bullying and recognize how important it is to take care of other members of our community. Throughout the academic year, this message is constantly reinforced and it is made very clear that this is a full community responsibility. While there is no 'playbook' for looking after others, there are three simple steps that students know should form the basis of establishing good community care.
Recognize: Keep your head up and be aware of how others are doing. Greet people as you pass them in the hallways and pathways, hold doors for each other. If someone seems like they need help, ask them if they are OK.

Care: You must care in your heart about others. This is central to our community at Shawnigan Lake School.

Act: If you notice someone needs help, do something. This may mean telling someone that you are there if they need you, telling a trusted adult that you think someone may need help or stepping in when someone is not being treated well. At Shawnigan, we expect that bystanders will act when needed.

This evening, senior student leaders will gather in boarding houses with their 'Big Brother / Big Sister Groups' and discuss the importance of the ideas behind Pink Shirt Day. A key message will be that treating others well should be a daily commitment.
