Shawnigan Hosts the VEX Robotics Island Regional Championships

The Shawnigan Robotics team finished up a great season at the VEX Robotics Island Regional Provincial Championships on Saturday, March 5, hosted here on the Shawnigan campus. Top robots from across the island gathered in the new gym and battled for four berths in the VEX Robotics World Championships, taking place in Texas this summer. The four berths were awarded to teams and their robots in the categories of Excellence and Design, with two spots also given to the Tournament Champions. Our teams fought hard and all made it to the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated in close matches. One Shawnigan team posted the fourth-highest score in the province for individual skills challenges and another team posted the sixth-highest provincial score for skills. This is a huge accomplishment as they have seen great progress year over year.
While the Shawnigan teams did not earn a berth at the World Championships, they did not go home empty-handed from the weekend's competition, with two teams walking away with some hardware as two Shawnigan robots won judged awards: an Amaze Award and a Build Award. Team 6264B, comprised of Grade 11 students Tye E., Aniela H., Kyan M., and Ben P., won the best-built robot award (Build Award) and team 6264A, comprised of Jacky L. and our robotics captains Janie Z., and Justin L., won the award for the robot with the most amazingly creative design (Amaze Award). Two awards for our teams to be proud of!

Congratulations to our Grade 12s, Isaac A., Misha B., Jacky L., Justin L., and Janie Z.,  who have dedicated their years at Shawnigan to developing and evolving this robotics program. Go Robots!! With the growing need for a dedicated space on campus for our robotics, and with the support of C.A.S.E., there are some exciting things in the works behind the scenes as part of Shawnigan’s strategic plan, Project Future.

Shawnigan Lake School is adhering to all COVID-19 guidelines released by the BC Ministries of Health and Education.
