Legally Blonde the Musical

Shawnigan Lake School’s musical theatre company dazzled in its return to the stage at the McPherson Playhouse in Victoria with its production of Legally Blonde the Musical. This fun, high-energy show, based on the beloved 2001 film of the same name, took those fortunate enough to be in the audience on a magical ride, keeping them grinning from ear to ear, singing along with the songs, and cheering on the protagonists throughout the show.
Led by a bevy of strong lead actors, the stellar cast wowed audiences across four outstanding performances. Shawnigan has a history of putting on high-calibre musical theatre productions, but this year’s show had a special heaping of magic dust – or was it just glitter? – that gave the entire production an undeniable glow.

The musical is a major highlight in Shawnigan’s annual calendar and the return to the theatre was a thrill for not only the cast and crew, but also for their peers and teachers in the audience, who have missed the excitement nearly as much as they have. Nothing can quite replace the experience of performing in front of a large audience in a theatre, along with all the anticipation, nerves, and adrenaline that come with it. Across four performances, the atmosphere in the theatre was electric.

This show was dedicated to the cast and crew of Shawnigan’s 2020 production of Legally Blonde, who were unable to perform when the world ground to a halt in March 2020, mere weeks before their own staging of Legally Blonde was set to begin. Many in the 2022 company were either part of the 2020 cast or were younger siblings of the 2020 cast. For them, and for the musical staff team, this year’s show was a resolution of sorts.

Congratulations to the entire cast and crew and staff team and to the inimitable and incredibly talented Mr. McLeod (Director), Mrs. McLeod (Choreographer), and Ms Tyrrell (Music Director). This was a show we will never forget!
