Guidance Update - May 5

Dear Parents,

Though it's been a busy week with AP exams and a ramping up of athletic competitions, we are still continuing to see students on a regular basis in the Guidance Office.
Our Grade 10 students are confirming their course selections, our Grade 11 students are getting deeper into their post-secondary plans, and we continue to see our 12s as some decisions for university choices are still coming in. May is a very common month for universities to require students to decide on which university they will attend so we have had a number of conversations in our offices that run the gamut from those who cannot wait for university to those who never want to leave Shawnigan Lake School!

Shawnigan Lake School was fortunate enough to be selected as one of 15 Canadian independent schools by Education in Ireland to visit Ireland for the purpose of learning more about some amazing educational opportunities. I was able to visit eight different institutions in Ireland and learn more about some of the different programs available to undergraduate students. Certainly one of the more popular options for Canadian and American students in Ireland is the ability to enter directly into a medical school that can be completed in five or six years. I will be planning an information session for our students about this region shortly.

We are continuing to see a few schools reach out to us for visits. Though not coordinated, we will be seeing some great options from the Canadian Atlantic provinces coming in May. We will be hosting:

Dalhousie University - May 12
Acadia University - May 16
St. FX University - May 18

All visits are open to students in grades 10 and 11 and will be held after school in the Guidance Office.

On Friday, May 13 at 2:00 pm, we will also be hosting a workshop on Applying for Scholarships in the Guidance Office

Students will be informed about these visits by email and can register through their Maia account or by reaching out to us in GO.

As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks,

Craig Brown
Director of University Guidance
