Young Entrepreneurs Hit the Ice

Students in Shawnigan’s Entrepreneurship & Marketing 10 classes have learned a lot this year, but nothing beats what is learned through real-world applications. Following on the success of the soccer jerseys that were designed by last year’s class for the School’s “Vancouver Island Premier League” – our in-house Shawnigan soccer league that was created during the pandemic when competing against outside schools wasn’t possible – the classes have embarked on a similar project, this time for the Shawnigan Staff & Friends Hockey League (SSFHL).
To mirror how a task like this would work in the real world, the project started as a competition for these young up-and-coming entrepreneurs and marketers as the two classes were divided into eight groups, with four designing a dark jersey and the other four designing a light one. Each group presented their final designs to members of the hockey league and two winners were selected. From there, the classes were divided into two different franchise groups, responsible for final logo design, ordering, sponsorship packages, and more.

On Monday evening the students got to celebrate their projects in a unique way – by playing a game with our staff hockey team who wore the jerseys they designed! With many students in the two classes also being passionate young hockey players, this was a project that was not only fun but close to their hearts as well. It is projects like this that provide our students with opportunities to see their work come to life and to learn from teachers who encourage them to problem solve critically and creatively, inspiring our students to embrace a love of learning.
