Inter-House Roundup

While students have been busy with their academics, athletics, and co-curricular 360s, the inter-House events on campus provide an opportunity for the students to connect, enjoy a little friendly competition, and show off their House spirit. The most recent inter-House activities have left a mark on the students this year as they took place just as we saw a lifting of the COVID-19 mandates, making the events feel more like pre-pandemic times. Donned head to toe in their brightest House colours and with loud cheers of support, the pent-up energy flowing through the crowds at each event was contagious.
In early March, just prior to the lifting of the mandates, the Inter-House Erging competition took place, with all Houses putting their top performers on the rowing machines to erg it out for the chance to claim victory for their House. The event was held on a rainy evening with all who weren’t participating able to enjoy the live-streamed event in their dormitories. In the end, it was Strathcona and Duxbury Houses that earned the victory.

April saw two more popular inter-House events take place – ice hockey and basketball – and with a return to full capacity in the gym and arena, the students were able to enjoy these events to their fullest. It was so invigorating to see all the students together under one roof again and to hear the crowds go wild as they cheered on their fellow students; the energy was electric for those in attendance. Ice hockey took place early in the month and the Charlie Purdey Arena was a sea of colours as the Houses took to the ice, with Strathcona and Kaye’s tying for first place on the girls’ side and Lonsdale’s getting the win on the boys’ side. The fierce rivalries continued as the Houses took to the courts for basketball near the end of the month, with Lonsdale’s and Kaye’s claiming victory again.

As the students and staff look forward to more inter-House competitions before the end of term, and as we reflect on the most recent ones that took place, we are reminded of the importance that events like these have in building a strong sense of community and belonging. They are a shining example of how the School continues to deliver on its strategic pillar of Student Life Unparalleled.
