Students get a look at Canadian universities

Students from Shawnigan and other local high schools focused on their futures earlier this month when the School hosted the Canadian Universities Event in the New Gym. Representatives from 52 universities across Canada were on hand, and students were able to learn about new programs and new opportunities, and consider post-secondary institutions they may not have thought about otherwise.

Students in Grades 10, 11 and 12 were encouraged to attend the fair, and many of them took advantage of the opportunity to speak with the university representatives and ask insightful questions.
“The discussions with students that have followed demonstrated the importance of hosting these types of events,” said Mrs. Hannah Gottfried, Shawnigan’s Director of University Guidance. “Some students had not realized how many different universities there are in Canada, some learned about a new program that interested them, some learned about the accessibility centers and how their IEP can be supported in post-secondary, and others learned what the international exchange options are, as examples.”

The university representatives were given a tour of campus by a group of Grade 11 students, and dined in Marion Hall prior to the fair, giving them a chance to experience what Shawnigan provides.

The CUE was the biggest university event that Shawnigan will host this year, but the School will continue to host university visits throughout the year.

University visits are just part of what Shawnigan’s fantastic Guidance Office does for our students. The Guidance team also supports students who wish to pursue post-secondary athletics, coordinates SATs and PSATs, and provides a variety of workshops for university-bound students.

Be on the lookout for upcoming events that will allow students to look into opportunities at universities outside of Canada as well.
