Shawnigan Lake Regatta

The weather was staggeringly hot, but the water was calm last weekend as Shawnigan hosted more than 600 athletes from schools and clubs across BC for the annual Shawnigan Lake School Regatta, an event the School has been running on an annual basis since 1962.

It isn’t often that a regatta this size gets all its races in without a hitch, but the cooperative conditions made for a smooth event this year.

“It was a fabulous weekend through and through,” commented rowing coach and science teacher Mrs. Erica Hamilton, who led the team that organized the regatta. “Rarely do you get a regatta that runs precisely on time for 118 races in a row. We were blessed with the most beautiful weather.”

In addition to the weather, the organizers got a lot of help from student, parent and staff volunteers who put in countless hours over the weekend, on and off the water, many of them giving up precious time with their families on Mother’s Day.

“Thank you to everyone who signed up for shifts at the regatta,” Head of Rowing Mr. Paul Hawksworth said. “Your time and positivity was greatly appreciated. I heard over and over about how nice our volunteers were. You are what makes this place so special.”

Mr. Hawksworth noted that he received great feedback from athletes, coaches, parents, and officials at the regatta. He commended the Shawnigan rowers for putting in their best efforts at the program’s marquee event. Shawnigan collected 18 medals over the weekend.

JD P. took first in the U17 JV boys’ single, and Shawnigan also won the U17 boys’ double, and placed first and second in the U19 novice girls’ coxed quad. Other second-place results came in the U19 JV girls’ eight and U19 boys’ double and quad.

Ian G. placed third in the U19 boys’ single, and Dylan A. was third in the U17 boys’ single. Shawnigan also placed third in the U17 girls’ eight and double, the U17 JV boys’ coxed four, the U19 girls’ eight and coxed four, the U19 boys’ coxed four, the U19 JV boys’ double and quad, and the U19 mixed double.

There was a last-minute entry in the U19 boys' eight as the national women's team joined the race for some extra training. Shawnigan is proud to have Rowing Canada as a partner, and fortunate that the national organization trains on the same waters as us.

Several of the rowers who competed at the Shawnigan Regatta will represent the School at the 76th Annual Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Championships in St. Catharines, Ontario on June 2-4.
