Estuary field trip

A cross-curricular expedition

Shawnigan's Grade 9 class ventured away from the classroom on Monday, for a morning of cross-curricular study at the Cowichan Estuary.

Accompanied by teachers from the math, science, English and social studies departments, the students examined local flora and fauna, particularly in the tidal zone where the Cowichan and Koksilah Rivers meet the Pacific Ocean.

As part of the trip, students completed small mathematical surveys, studied the species found in the estuary, wrote poems about Mt. Tzouhalem, and spoke with Cowichan educator Hwiemtun (Fred Roland) about language, culture and technology.

We are grateful for the opportunity to share in this beautiful region, and we aspire to healthy and respectful relationships with those who have lived on and cared for these lands for millennia.
