International experience

Shawnigan athletes play rugby for Canada

Some of Shawnigan's top rugby players have returned from the Christmas break bearing some new team Canada swag.

Grade 12 athlete Reece T. enjoyed a three-game tour of Ireland with the Canadian Under-19 squad, featuring stops in Ards, Belfast, and Ulster.

Meanwhile, James M., Dean M., and Ciaran B. took part in the North America 4 series in Arizona.  The series included games against All-American high school squads, and was a stepping stone for players hoping to represent Canada on an under-18 tour of the UK in March.

In all, nine Shawnigan boys were selected for various national team tours and camps, though five of those were unable to attend due to prior engagements.

Another elite player, Jack S., represented Canada at an under-18 rugby sevens tournament in New Zealand just before the break.  "It was tough, but unreal," he smiles. Jack says seeing the skill level of the players involved, and feeling part of the international rugby culture, was an unforgettable experience.

Rugby Canada will be announcing the roster for the upcoming Youth Olympics Qualifying Tournament next week.
