Basketball update

Shawnigan teams enter stretch drive
Shawnigan's basketball teams are stringing together strong results midway through the season.

Senior Girls

The girls spent the weekend on the court at Wellington Secondary, earning third place overall in a highly competitive tournament.

After opening play with a comfortable win over D.W. Poppy, Shawnigan succumbed to a very strong AAA squad out of NDSS.

Facing the host team in the third place game, Shawnigan had stellar performances from Milena J., Ivy T., and Tatum H. to beat Wellington 40-32.

The senior girls will compete at a tournament at Mark Isfeld Secondary in Courtenay next weekend.

Senior Boys

Continuing to build on what's been an exciting season so far, the senior boys wrapped up league play with matchups against Gulf Islands and Brentwood.

On Thursday, the team got contributing minutes from all players on home court in a comprehensive victory over GISS. Sergio P. led Shawnigan scorers with 23 points, while Nic. K. chipped in 13.

On Friday, the boys played in front of a packed house at Brentwood College School for a showcase game against a key rival, with Brentwood ultimately winning 72-43.

Having finished in second place in their league, Shawnigan will continue with tournament play until playoffs, beginning with the Victoria Police Tournament this weekend.

Junior Girls

Shawnigan's junior girls also continue to impress, despite a long list of injuries and absences.

Competing at the ICE tournament at Mark Isfeld Secondary this weekend, the girls opened with a big win over Carihi. The team suffered a one-point loss to Kwalicum in the semifinals before rebounding with a strong win over host Isfeld in the third place game.

"Every single girl played so well," says Coach Ronni Brown, adding, "This was the best I've seen them play."

The junior girls head to the ISA Championship next weekend at York House School in Vancouver.

The junior boys, meanwhile, will return to action next weekend at the ISA event at Mulgrave School. The midget boys play home games this week against Francis Kelsey and SIMS.
