Ice Hockey Round Up

An action-packed weekend
Shawnigan's Midget Varsity hockey team enjoyed a successful trip to the US, while three other teams competed closer to home.

Midget Varsity

Leaving campus after class on Thursday, the Midget Varsity hockey team flew to Chicago for a series of games at Culver Academies in Indiana, the home of America’s No. 1 ranked prep team.

The squad faced off against Culver Academies’ U-16 team on Friday. The game was tied 6-6 after regulation, and after five minutes of exciting 3-on-3 overtime, Shawnigan prevailed in a shootout. The Varsity boys went on to their second loss of the season in a 4-0 game against the Meijer, an AAA minor hockey team from Michigan, on Saturday before meeting Culver once again on Sunday and winning in another shootout.

The weekend also included a tour of the world-famous University of Notre Dame and a private tour of the university’s NCAA Division I men’s hockey dressing room and facilities, newly built in 2010. On Sunday, the boys took in an original six game at the United Centre as the Chicago Blackhawks played the Detroit Red Wings, and were given the opportunity to tour Chicago’s dressing rooms and meet a couple of the players after the game. Sunday afternoon and Monday were spent exploring the main cultural sights of the Windy City.

“If you combine those athletic, academic and cultural elements along with the success that we had in our hockey games, it was a really worthwhile trip,” shared Midget Varsity Assistant Coach David Chant.

Midget Prep

Shawnigan's Midget Prep team had a light weekend, travelling to Burnaby for a single game against the top team in the division.

Despite suffering a 6-1 loss, the team is excited for a trip to Boston and Providence departing early Wednesday morning.

Girls Prep

Shawnigan's girls team played two outstanding games in the Vancouver area, but proved unable to find the back of the net.  Facing Delta Hockey Academy in back-to-back matchups, the girls lost 2-1 on Saturday before falling 2-0 on Sunday.

Bantam Prep

After representing the School well at the Pat Quinn Classic over the Christmas Break, the Bantam squad returned to regular season play.

On Saturday, the boys lost by a wide margin to Delta Hockey Academy's 'Green' team. On Sunday, Shawnigan pushed DHA 'White' to overtime and then a remarkable 13-round shootout, ultimately losing 4-3.

The team returned to home ice on Monday evening to finish a game previously delayed due to injury. After picking up play midway through a tied third period, Shawnigan conceded an unlucky goal against and lost 3-2.
